Giant Sequoia Pictures

The Robert E. Lee tree was named in 1875 for the famous Confederate general. This enormous Sequoia tree, located in Grant Grove within Kings Canyon National Park, is over 22 feet in diameter and 254 feet high. It has survived many fires, as evidenced by the scars at its base. Its fibrous, fire-resistant bark, 2 feet or more in thickness on some Sequoias, helps protect the giant trees from more severe damage during fires. Giant sequoia tree, Sequoiadendron giganteum.
